PSI - Programs & Events
We offer you a vast range of preventive and educational programs that are designed to support and educate you on an assortment of topics. Living with children and people with a disability can be a challenge. At the PMFRC, we believe in creating and promoting environments that foster the social and emotional well-being for ALL our military families, regardless of a child’s ability or special need. If you have any questions or require more information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
- Operational Stress Injuries
- This presentation is offered in partnership with Operational Stress Injuries Social Support (OSISS) to help you understand the emotional and/or psychological impact traumatic events can have on you and your family. Open to all adult community members. Check out the online calendar to see if there are any upcoming workshops planned, or contact the coordinator below. OSISS workshops have a component for the military member as well as the military family.

- Prenatal Nutrition Program:
- The Prenatal Nutrition program is open to all women in Petawawa area who are pregnant. We encourage women to begin the program as soon as they find out they are pregnant. No registration required, just come to the group on the day that is best for you.

- FRIENDS for Life
- FRIENDS for Life helps children and teenagers cope with feelings of fear, anxiety, and depression by building resilience and self-esteem and teaching cognitive and emotional skills in a simple, well-structured format. The Phoenix Centre for Children & Families and the PMFRC have teamed up to offer the FRIENDS for Life program to military families. FRIENDS for Children 7–11 years and FRIENDS for Youth 12–16 years will both be offered in the Petawawa area starting in February. For more details on this program visit our parenting skills page.

- Navigator Program – Meet & Greet
- This information session is designed to help parents with children with special needs "navigate" the social, educational and health systems. Come out and get your free "Keeping it Together" kit developed by McMaster University, CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, The Hamilton Family Network and Easter Seal Society and help your child succeed. Parents as Partners Workshop 1 - Strategies for Effective Partnerships: Communicating for Success
- This workshop is for any parent of a child with special needs who is attending school or getting ready to start school. The workshop provides some great tips and strategies to help develop positive relationships with school staff. The fun activities will help to improve negotiation and problem solving skills

- Parents as Partners - Workshop 2 - Special Education: Understanding the Process and the Parent Role
- This workshop provides parents with an introduction to special education in Ontario schools. Parents will learn some of the special education language "jargon" used by teachers and principals and how the school system supports students with special education needs. Workshop activities will help parents to understand their rights in special education and their role in working with the school to support their child’s needs.

- Parents as Partners - Workshop 3 - Two Part Workshop on The Individual Education Plan (IEP)
- Part1: The Individual Education Plan (IEP), an Introduction of the IEP and the Parent Role. The Individual Education Plan is the most important document for students with special education needs. This workshop provides information about the purpose of the IEP and the process for development and review of the IEP. Workshop activities will help parents to understand how the IEP helps students and how they can support the school in the development and monitoring of the IEP.
Part 2: The Individual Education Plan (IEP), Developing Effective IEPs for Student Success. This workshop looks at the content of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) in more detail and helps parents understand the language and terminology used in the IEP. Parents will also learn how to share information about their child to support the IEP development and improve student achievement at school

- Parents as Partners Workshop 4 - Maximize Your Child's Potential
- provide Offered by Dale Ford, Director of Edu-Advocates. This series is designed to help you maximize your child’s potential by making the system work for them. The workshop will provide you with the tools you need to connect you with various services offered, find out about disability tax services and accessing grant money to help you through the tough times. This workshop will also help in the transition of children of military personnel from school to school, province to province. There are quite a few benefits that we can.
