- Navigator Program - For CF Families with Special Needs and Responsibilities
-
The PMFRC believes in creating and promoting environments that foster the social and emotional well-being of ALL our military families, regardless of a child’s ability or special needs. The Navigator Program fills this bill.
We all know that frequent relocations and deployment can add challenges for us that the average family may not deal with. Add to that a child with Autism, ADHD, Down syndrome or other developmental challenges and the situation can become overwhelming. The goal of this program is to introduce families with special needs and responsibilities to each other, educate them on the various resources that are available to them in their surrounding community and provide them with educational workshops to help them navigate through the system.
This program will provide you with an opportunity to meet and learn from others in similar circumstances, meet experts in the field and learn how to access the resources in your community to better equip you in facing your unique challenges.
Attend and get your free "Keeping it Together" kit developed by McMaster University, CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, The Hamilton Family Network and Easter Seal Society.

- FRIENDS for Life
FRIENDS for Life helps children and teenagers cope with feelings of fear, anxiety and depression by building resilience and self-esteem and teaching cognitive and emotional skills in a simple, well-structured format.
Used in schools and clinics throughout the world, FRIENDS is the only childhood anxiety prevention program acknowledged by the World Health Organization for its 12 years of comprehensive evaluation and practice. It has proven effective for up to 6 years after initial exposure.
Anxiety is the most common form of mental disorder, affecting up to 15% of children and adolescents. Anxiety significantly interferes with a child’s ability to confidently handle everyday situations including relationships with peers, adults and family and school achievement. If left unattended, these anxiety difficulties may continue into young adulthood, sometimes leading to depression. FRIENDS combats anxiety by fostering an emotional resilience in children & teenagers that will stay with them for life.
The Phoenix Centre for Children & Families and the PMFRC have teamed up to offer the FRIENDS for Life program to military families. FRIENDS for Children 7–11 years, and FRIENDS for Youth 12–16 years, will both be offered in the Petawawa area.
