Dealing with Child's Behaviour
-
Take a deep breath! Remember - children do not act out because they want to make us upset. They act out because they don’t know how else to express themselves.
- Don’t be afraid to take a break. You are not a failure if you need to have a few hours to yourself! The break will benefit both of you. If your partner is away due to military duty, check with our deployment support team to find out about the eligibility for Respite Care.
- Time out! Use the “time out” as an opportunity to gather your thoughts and try to offer your children a smile when the time out is over. Here is a great link with resources for how to effectively use "time outs" with children and adolescents. http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/behaviour/TimeOut.htm
- Love can conquer all. Even when your children are being exceptionally difficult, remind them that you don’t like their behaviour but you still love them.
- Is this a behavioural issue? If you feel that you need some help dealing with your children’s behaviour, you can contact the Crisis Prevention staff at the PMFRC. If you feel that you need long-term support, you can contact The Phoenix Centre for Children and Families, 1-800-465-1870,or write an email at phoenix@renc.igs.net
- STOP!! If you are worried that you may hurt your children, physically or emotionally, and would like support to keep that from happening, contact Family and Children's Services

- The Phoenix Centre for Children and Families
- The Phoenix Centre is operated by Renfrew County Youth Services, providing day programs, group and individual programs and counselling for families and youth. Their philosophy is that change is possible in every situation. We also believe that the family is still the most important influence in a child’s life and that a child’s problems are best addressed with the involvement of his or her family.
