Resources and Activities for Youth (6 - 9 years)
Discovery & Decisions
Parenting six to nine year olds is a time of pride as they discover and start to make their own decisions. It can also be one of confusion for parents as we too make decisions about rules at home, how to handle behaviour and how best to raise our young person.
Nowhere does a community make as great an impact as on the life of a six to nine year old children. They are participating in your activities, school programs, extra-curricular clubs and gaining new friends and slowly new freedom. Here are some resources we felt may be helpful to you are you raise your six to nine year old.
- Children's Deployment Support Program (CDSP)
- Watch for us at your school (click for a list of schools). Get out of class and just be you. If we are not at your school let us know. This activity-based program provides children from JK to grade 8 an opportunity to discuss their experiences related to a parent's absence and develop positive coping tools. Kids Have Stress Too! May 22, 29 and June 5 at 6:30pm – 8:00pm, register by May 20 at the South Side Community Centre. A program for parents of children from preschool to age nine. The program is designed to help parents and caregivers better understand stress and to help them teach their children ways to manage it.
Parenting Through Deployment – 8 weekly workshop starting Tue Apr 8 at 6:30pm or Apr 9 at 10am, South Side Community Centre, register by Apr 4. Deployment can be a stressful time for parents and children. As a temporary single parent you may face many parenting challenges as you continue to nurture and care for your children. This 8-week program will introduce you to some effective parenting strategies, as well as the positive living skills being used in the "Children’s Deployment Support Program". We welcome parents of children between the ages 6 to 12 to come and share their experiences with others.
Children & Deployment – Sat May 3 from 9:30 to 11:30 am, South Side Community Centre, register by May 1. This workshop is to help parents and caregivers understand how children are affected when a parent deploys, their normal reactions, and some ways of dealing with their reactions.
- Activities for Children Aged 6-9
- Offered approximately four times during the year, as well as, PA School Days, these half-day themed activities are centered around cooking, crafts, life skills and games. Payment & parental consent are due upon registration.

- Fun-Fit Fridays (CFB Petawawa Rec Plex)
- They put the wacky fun and the funky fit into Fridays! There your youth will find positive role models, enrichment and physical activity, wacky and wild science experiments, and creative arts. Join their crusade in healthy active living for youth in our community. Kids can register for the session or drop-in with friends.

- Before & After School Program (CFB Petawawa Rec Plex)
- They provide a safe and stimulating envrionment for your children before and after school. A healthy breakfast and snack are provided along with games, sporting, activities, and quiet time for optimal development. Programs operate both out of the Recreation Complex and the South Side Community Centre serving (L'école Eléméntaire Équinox, L'École Jeanne-Lajoie pavillion élémentaire, General Lake Public School, Pinecrest Public School, St. Francis of Assissi Catholic, Our Lady of Sorrows and Herman Street Schools)

Summer Sizzler Day Camp (CFB Petawawa Rec Plex)
- They offer a mix of general and specialty camps to enrich the play time of each child. It's a summer filled with remarkable opportunities to meet new friends and create memorable moments.
